PA Academic Standards for English Language Arts
CC.1.4.2.M - Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events.
CC.1.3.2.O - Include thoughts and feelings to describe experiences and events to show the response of characters to situations.
CC.1.4.2.Q - Choose words and phrases for effect.
Objectives
1. Students will brainstorm adjectives and verbs that appropriately depict the music played.
2. Students will use their bodies to depict the appropriate adjectives and verbs they chose.
3. Students will use the words selected
Materials
—CD player or iPod & dock (with “Flight of the Bumblebee”, Beethoven’s Pathetique Sonata, Mozart’s Symphony No. 40, and Elgar’s Nimrod Symphony IX)
—chart paper & various markers
—lined paper and pencils for each student
Procedure
1. Play samples from each selected piece of music.
2. After playing each song again, ask students to describe each song in one word (probing for more descriptive words than “happy” or “sad”-search for more descriptive synonyms).
3. Write each adjective on chart paper under the song’s title. Then, ask students to express these adjectives with their bodies. (Ask “how can you show me what ‘excited’ means with only your body?”)
4. Separate the adjectives from the blank bottom of the chart paper. Playing each song again, ask students to choose action words that match the piece. (Again, probe for more descriptive words, not just “jump”). Record the words for each piece.
5. Repeat step #3 with verbs selected.
Application & Evaluation
Each student will choose one adjective and two verbs to use in sentences they create in their daily journals. These journal entries will be used to evaluate their understanding at a later time.
